The program aims at helping the students to master the intellectual and scientific aspects of translation as a new field of study. It intends to prepare the graduates to become bilingual translators and interpreters to meet the needs of Oman society and the work market for such professionals. This complies well with the great role that Oman plays in the international relations and cultural interactions.

ENGL002– General English
The course is intended for students at beginner level to upper - intermediate level . It follows an integrated multi-skills approach in developing the student’s performance in English. It lays special emphasis on the productive skills and uses authentic material relevant situations and language functions which are presented throughout the course.
ENGL003– Communicative English
This is a transitional course for students to move on from general language to English for special purposes. It covers the four language skills with a particular emphasis on longer authentic reading texts which are relevant to students’ studies and interests. Moreover, students practice writing many short paragraphs. The language skills are intended to be developed strongly to enable students to complete their study in English on a solid basis.
COMS151– Oral Skills and Public Speaking
The course aims at developing the student’s ability to interact orally in English with emphasis on accuracy and fluency. Authentic materials in terms of language forms, functions, situations , and topics are used . Students are guided to practice various modes of interaction and build up their own strategies to achieve effective communication.
ENGL101– Listening Comprehension
The course aims at helping students to become effective listeners focusing on listening for the main ideas, variations in intonations, pausing and note-taking skills. The course highlights confidence building, gap repair and important speech.
ENGL102–Intermediate Reading
The course deals with reading comprehension in terms of developing students’ abilities to extract information from a text. They are supposed to develop certain reading techniques such as speed reading, prediction and making use of their grammatical knowledge in working out meaning. Developing vocabulary is a goal for this course.
ENGL098-Introduction to Essay Writing
The course aims at developing students’ writing skill which is still inadequate and they need improvement at paragraph writing level .The course focuses on helping students to show their integrative utilization of their linguistic knowledge as well as their proficiency in the other language skills .It also helps to develop knowledge and skill of certain organizational and mechanical patterns such as capitalization and punctuation.
ENGL103– Basic English Grammar
The course focuses on the fundamental rules of English grammar as they relate to sentence structure. It deals with topics such as noun phrase , verb phrase , adjectives ,adverbs and prepositions .The course also covers tense and aspect combinations , count / non- count distinction , articles and parallel constructions .
ENGL205- Introduction to Translation
The course is aiming at dealing with the principles of translation, so contrastive analysis, stylistics and lexical problems are discussed within the context of translating from English to Arabic and vice versa . Types of translation are discussed .Basic techniques in translation are used to produce supervised translations of various types texts.
ENGL255- Introduction to English Literature
This course introduces the students to the concept of literary genre as well as the principal genres of literature in English. The genres that are covered include lyric, drama and fiction. Students are also introduced to other terms and concepts that are basic to the study of literature, such as metaphor, narrative and irony.
LING402- Phonetics and Phonology.(Prereq.ENGL301 )
The course deals with the sounds of English and examines the nature of the rules governing the sound system of English. It introduces the study of the physiology of speech production and phonetic transcription through practical exercises. It also helps students to use technical terms in describing speech and talking about phonological literature.
ENGL308- Communicative Grammar (Prereq.ENGL103 )
The course focuses on the uses of grammar in communicating in English. It helps students to relate the grammatical structure systematically to meanings, uses and situations .It also helps them to explore the communicative choices offered by grammar based on their knowledge of the grammatical choices through which communication must be channelled.
ENGL204-Advanced Reading (Prereq.ENGL102)
The aim of the course is to further develop students’ reading speed and comprehension proficiency. It focuses on textual analysis of longer written passages and teaches students to approach the text as critical readers.
ENGL 155 – Essay Writing and F.C. (Prereq.ENGL098 )
The course aims to consolidate and deepen students’ experience in writing .The writing activities vary in type, subject and length with the progression of the course .The course lays heavy emphasis on effective expository and argumentative writing .It approaches writing as a process , emphasizes redrafting , and enhances students’ awareness of purpose and audience.
ENGL307- Morphology and Lexical Studies (Prereq.ENGL301)
The course introduces major types of morphological phenomena, their analysis, and current theoretical approaches to handling them. It focuses on inflection, and derivation, the mechanisms for English word-formation and their implications for the lexicon. Meaning changes across time and across dialects is also studied.
ENGL301- Introduction to Linguistics
This course introduces students to the basic concepts and issues in linguistics. It further makes them aware of the nature of human language and its main features. It also familiarizes them with the procedures of analyzing a language at various phonetic and phonological levels taking English as an example.
BCGE006- Research Methodology
The course introduces students to the tools and techniques of collecting and interpreting information. Students learn how to narrow down a topic, assemble bibliography and create a working plan for a research paper. They also learn how to organize material and integrate information from primary and secondary sources into a coherent academic paper.
LING408- Semantics and Pragmatics (Prereq.ENGL301)
The course introduces various approaches to the study of meaning in language both at the word and sentence levels. It examines linguistic reference and truth conditions of linguistic expressions and signs. It also explores the role of shared inferential strategies, presuppositions, and speech acts in human communication. The students realize how situational contexts determine language use.
LING404 –Syntax (Prereq.ENGL301)
The course introduces the descriptive analysis of the sentence constituents that cover word classes, phrases and sentence patterns. It also examines the syntactic processes like coordination and subordination, complexity, related logical connectors and ambiguity.
LING441-Sociolinguistics (Prereq.ENGL301)
The course introduces students to the sociolinguistic approach to language. It focuses on issues about how language structure and language use are interrelated. It also examines variables responsible for language variation within a speech community. Therefore, topics such as sociolinguistic goals, techniques and levels of analysis, implications of the recognition of language as a social phenomena and its importance in social interaction, functions of different speech varieties in human communities, namely correctness, register, ethnicity, bilingualism, diglossia are explored in the course.
ENGL313- Applied Linguistics (Prereq.ENGL301)
The course investigates the relationship between the field of applied linguistics and the language communication process in and outside the classroom. It views linguistics in terms of real world applications and from the perspective of teaching practitioners in different professional settings. It enhances students’ knowledge and awareness of the analysis and explanation of their developmental errors, learning strategies and communication strategies.
LING505- Discourse Analysis (Prereq.ENGL307)
The course looks at the interpretation of meaning beyond the level of the sentence. It examines the roles of notions such as background knowledge, cohesion and coherence to achieve a better understanding of how language works as a communication medium in texts and conversational interaction.
ENGL306-Contrastive Linguistics (Prereq. ENGL301)
The course introduces the hypotheses and methods of contrastive analysis and investigates differences between English and Arabic. The focus is on selected areas of the sound system, word formation, and grammatical and syntactic structures found in both languages. Students are required to solve practical problems in error analysis and undertake research projects.
ENGL208- Introduction to Creative Writing (Prereq.ENGL098)
The course is designed to instill the love of writing and the appreciation of reading literary works in students to help them get over the writer’s block. It also guides them to write imaginatively and creatively in different literary genres away from the constraints of academic writing format. Hence reading for pleasure and experimenting with and content are two strong elements in the course.
LING417-Language Development & Acquisition (Prereq.ENGL301)
The course introduces the study of the psychology of language by exploring the relationship between language and the mind. It examines processes involved in comprehension, production and acquisition of language and initiates students to research techniques and linguistic data collection.
BCGE004- Study Skills
The course helps students to improve their English and gives them skill and practice in using English as a language of instruction, in this case they can improve their study habits in English .The course stresses the fact that once the skill has been introduced, it is the student’s responsibility to continue practicing it on his/her own until it is mastered efficiently. Therefore, the course deals with topics such as using an English dictionary, learning vocabulary in English, outlining, improving your reading, using a library and preparing for examinations.
ENGL300- Media Translation (Prereq.ENGL205)
This course helps students to apply the principles of translation learned before to a variety of newspaper, radio, television and public relations texts The course also highlights the formats of new stories, feature articles, editorials, spoken and written language.
BCGE008 Arabic Syntax
The course emphasizes the linguistic description of Arabic syntax, an analysis of Arabic syntax by using modern approaches. This course presupposes earlier instruction in grammar within the scope of introductory language courses. The course provides a comprehensive treatment of the sentence in Arabic.
ENGL310 Sight Translation (Prerq.ENGL205)
The course aims at teaching the students how to translate a written text orally without much thinking and preparation. Students also get practice to master this important skill as an important step towards mastering consecutive translation.
ENGL211 Translation of English-Arabic Texts (Prereq.ENGL205)
This course is designed to equip students with the basic skills of translation from English into Arabic. The students are supposed to use their knowledge of translation strategies they have acquired in the course introduction to translation. The course gives more concentration to Arabic. It covers various registers including scientific, social, financial and others.
ENGL 311 Translation of Arabic-English Texts (Prereq.ENGL205)
This course provides students with the basic skills of translation from Arabic into English and use their knowledge of translation strategies. The course focuses mire on Arabic. It covers various registers including scientific, social, financial and others.
ENGL210 Western Culture
This course offers a good opportunity for students to learn about the culture and daily life-styles of English – speaking peoples around the world. It explores relevant topics such as geography, history, traditions, fashion, food and drink, law and order, music and sport. The students compare their own cultural aspects with those in English – speaking countries such as Britain, Ireland, Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
ENGL416Consecutive Interpretation (Prereq.ENGL205)
This course represents an introduction to Consecutive Interpretation. It is designed to provide students with the skills of content analysis, note-taking techniques, public speaking, presentation skills, sight translation and other skills pertinent to consecutive interpretation. It is also designed to help students use standard methods of recording information when listening to source language texts. The course also aims at making students aware of research findings in disciplines that have a bearing on interpretation, for example, psycholinguistics, communication and discourse studies. The course also aims at developing the students’ short and long term memory through specific exercises.
ENGL418 Translation Theory (Prereq.ENGL205)
This course is devoted to the study of the theory of translation. It examines in detail the different translation approaches, translation methods, principles and techniques and whether translation is a science or an art with practical illustrations and exercises.
ENGL302 Translation of Financial Texts (Prereq.ENGL205)
This course develops the student's knowledge of financial topics on an international level. It explores topics such as banking system, statements of accounts, and the translation of key documents. It also gives student practice in the translation of statements from Arabic into English and vice versa. The emphasis is laid on the business genres and their lexical features.
ENGL303 Translation of Legal Texts (Prereq.205)
This course develops the students' knowledge of legal matters on an international level .It explores topics such as pollution, law of the sea, civil rights and the translation of key documents. It also gives students practice in the translation of contracts from Arabic into English and vice versa. The emphasis is laid on the overall structure of contract genres and their lexical features.
ENGL305Translation of Literary Texts (prereq.ENGL205)
This course introduces students to the various approaches of translating religious and literary texts. The course focuses on the translation of the Prophet's tradition and simple and complex literary texts, taking into account the historical, the cultural, the aesthetic and the linguistic dimensions of these texts. The course aims to make students aware of the nature of religious and literary texts. The students become aware to the problems of translating Islamic texts into English, especially because in such texts many words of Arabic origin have to be used as loan words.
ENGL417 Vocabulary Development
This course introduces students to the various approaches of enriching their vocabulary , both active and recognition types .Students learn the techniques of discovery of the meanings of the different items , namely , recognition by context , discovery by dictionary and recognition by word analysis . It also highlights that one’s understanding of the text is essential for learning to work out the meaning of a word.
ENGL309Stylistics
The course introduces students to stylistics as the linguistic study of literature. The course emphasizes the practical ways and techniques to see how linguistics can contribute to the interpretation and appreciation of literature and can go beyond what traditional literary criticism has been able to achieve.
ENGL412 Translation for Communication (Prereq.ENGL205)
The course aims at developing the students’ skills and abilities to communicate successfully and appropriately in both Arabic and English .Therefore it investigates the fundamental differences between the ways of communication in both languages. This is handled through dealing with texts that help students to explore such differences and enhance their communication skills through using either language.
ENGL419Computer-Assisted Translation (prereq.ENGL205)
The course investigates the scope of computer-assisted translation including the latest techniques in this technological field. It examines the main approaches in this field and emphasizes the way in which computer-assisted research relies on the ideas drawn from, and the progress made in other areas such as translation theory and theoretical linguistics.
